History of Ephesus
During the Roman Empire, the Greek port of Ephesus became the largest city in Asia Minor and is now the best-preserved classical city in the Mediterranean. Your tour begins at the magnificent Magnesian Gate, then you'll discover the huge Forum, the impressive Odeon, the two-storey Library of Celsus, the Scolastica Thermal Fifths, the work of an excellent engineer, and the huge Great Theatre, which could seat a staggering 24,000 people. Ephesus is about 10 miles from Kusadasi, just before the town of Selcuk. After meeting your tour guide and driving to Ephesus (45 minutes away), you will first visit the Artemis Temple, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
After Ephesus, you will visit one of the 12 cities of Lonia (an ancient Greek district on the western coast of Asia Minor). As a port city on the Cayster (modern Küçükmenderes) River, it was an important starting point for trade routes to Asia Minor. Known in antiquity for its sacred shrines, the city was also an important centre of early Christianity.
House of the Virgin Mary
This house is located on the Aladag Mountains, 5 miles from Ephesus. At the Third Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431, it was claimed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D. After the discovery of the house, the Archbishop of Izmir declared it a palace of pilgrimage in 1892. On 26 July 1967, Pope Paul VI visited this place and prayed here.
